Bloating is a common and uncomfortable condition that many of us experience.. It can be frustrating and sometimes even painful, but understanding the causes can help you manage and prevent it. In this blog post, we’ll explore the various reasons behind bloating and offer tips on how to alleviate it.
What is bloating?
Bloating is the feeling of fullness or swelling in the abdomen, often accompanied by discomfort or pain. It can result from various factors, ranging from diet and lifestyle to underlying medical conditions.
Common causes of bloating
1. Dietary choices
Overeating, or eating gas producing foods like beans and carbonated beverages can cause gas build up in the digestive system. Foods with high fat content take longer to digest which can slow down stomach emptying and causing bloating. Too much fibre consumption can also cause bloating.
2. Swallowing Air
Eating too quickly can lead to swallowing excess air. This can also be caused by frequently chewing gum or sucking on hard sweets.
3. Food Intolerances and sensitivities
Celiac disease is sensitivity towards gluten which can be found in products containing wheat or barley and cause bloating. This can also occur with those who are lactose intolerant after consuming products that contain lactose such as milk.
4. Constipation
When stool builds up in the intestines, it can cause a feeling of fullness and bloating. This can be due to a lack of fibre, inadequate fluid intake, or reduced physical movement or activity.
5. Hormonal changes
Many women experience bloating before and during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes.
6. Medical Conditions
Medical conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastroparesis can cause symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation and more.
