IUCD/Coil Insertion

A coil, or intrauterine device (IUCD), is a small T-shaped device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It can be fitted at any time during your menstrual cycle and works by altering the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg and survive. Additionally, it can prevent a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterus. Coils are highly effective, with a success rate of 99%, and provide long-lasting protection ranging from 3 to 10 years, depending on the type. Once inserted, you are protected immediately, offering a convenient and reliable contraceptive option.

What Can I Expect at My Appointment?

Inserting the IUCD should take no longer than 5 minutes. You will lay down on a bed and your vagina will be held open using a speculum, a smooth, tube-like tool, and the IUCD will be inserted through the cervix and then into the womb. It may feel uncomfortable and slightly painful. You may experience period-like cramps after.
