Food is an integral part of our lives, and whilst most people can enjoy their favorite meals without worry, others may experience discomfort or adverse reactions after eating certain foods. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Do I have a food allergy or an intolerance?”, you’re not alone. Many people confuse these two conditions, but they are quite different in terms of causes, symptoms, and treatments. In this blog post, we’ll break down the key differences to help you better understand your body’s response to certain foods.

What is a food allergy?

A food allergy can cause symptoms like itching

A food allergy is a reaction from your immune system to a specific food. It occurs when your body mistakenly identifies a harmless food as a threat and mounts an immune response to “fight” the perceived danger. This reaction often involves the release of histamines and other chemicals, leading to symptoms that can range from mild to life-threatening.

Common symptoms of food allergies:

  • Hives or a rash on the skin
  • Swelling of the lips, face, or throat
  • A tingling sensation or itching inside the mouth
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea

Severe allergic reactions

When reactions to food allergies are severe, a reaction called anaphylaxis can be triggered. This is life-threatening and if any of the symptoms below are experienced you should called 999 immediately.

Symptoms:

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or a loss of conscious
  • Fast pulse
  • Feeling of a lump in your throat that makes it difficult to breathe
  • Constricted airways

What are some foods that commonly trigger allergies?

Seafood allergy is a common food allergy
  • Peanuts and tree nuts – e.g. almonds, walnuts & pistachios
  • Shellfish & fish – e.g. shrimps, prawns, crab & salmon
  • Dairy products – e.g. milk, cheese & yoghurt
  • Eggs
  • Soy & wheat

What is a food intolerance?

A food intolerance can cause issues like stomach aches

A food intolerance on the other hand, is not related to the immune system. It occurs when your body has difficulty digesting a particular food. This is often due to an enzyme deficiency. Whilst uncomfortable, a food intolerance is generally not life threatening and tends to cause digestive distress rather than a systemic immune reaction.

Common symptoms of food intolerance:

  • Bloating and gas
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Nausea

What are some foods that commonly trigger allergies?

Food intolerances can be cause by gluten or wheat
  • Lactose intolerance – A lack of lactase enzyme to digest dairy products such as milk.
  • Gluten intolerance (non-celiac) Difficulty digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.
  • FODMAP intolerance – Sensitivity to certain carbohydrates found in various foods, like onions, garlic, and certain fruits.

What are the key differences between food allergies and food intolerances?

Immune response vs. digestive issue

A food allergy involves the immune system, whilst food intolerance is primarily a digestive issue. In a food allergy, your body attacks a food protein, whereas intolerance typically results from your body’s inability to process certain food components.

Severity of symptoms

Allergies can lead to severe, even life threatening reactions like anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention. Intolerances cause discomfort but are rarely dangerous.

Speed of onset

Allergic reactions usually happen quickly, within minutes to a couple of hours after consuming the offending food. Intolerance symptoms can take longer to appear, sometimes hours after eating.
