Hepatitis B is a virus that spreads through the blood and body fluids, resulting in an infection in the liver. It is common in countries that are in Asia, Africa, South America and the Carribean. It can be contracted if you have sex with someone who is infected, sharing drug preparation equipment with someone like a needle, sharing personal care items like razors or toothbrushes and getting cut with a sharp tool in a health care setting.
What Can I Expect at My Appointment?
A Healthcare professional will ask questions such as your previous medical history, where you are staying, activities you will be doing and how long you will be staying abroad. The course consists of 3 doses; you second dose is given 4 weeks after the first and then the final dose is injected 5 months later. However, if you are travelling at short notice, you may be able to get second dose after 7 days and then the last dose at least 14 days after. You may experience some side effects after your vaccination such as fatigue and soreness at the injection site, but these should subside within a few days.
